Managing Director of Checkatrade, Kevin Byrne, is aiming to raise £130,000 by running 12 marathons in 12 months in aid of Redwood Park School in Cosham, Portsmouth.

Kevin has organised his impressive challenge through the Checkatrade foundation with support from Wave 105’s Cash for Kids. Last week, Kevin completed the first of his marathons in less than five hours.

Kevin, who is running the marathons via treadmill in Sainsbury’s stores across the Wave 105 listener region, was joined for his first 5k by drive time presenter, Rick Jackson. Kevin is now underway with training for marathon number two.

Wave 105 and Checkatrade have a longstanding partnership, so when it came to planning for his challenge, Kevin came straight to the radio station’s charity, Cash for Kids for advice.

The Wave 105 Cash for Kids team took Kevin through its grants process, identifying a number of projects which Checkatrade could support. Kevin chose Redwood Park School in Cosham, Portsmouth, a school which educates children with a variety of learning difficulties.

Kevin said: “I had heard about people completing these mammoth marathon challenges, so I decided that this was something I wanted to have a go at too. Once I had decided upon my challenge, I needed to find a great cause to raise money for.

“I, along with my colleagues at Checkatrade, decided that Redwood Park School would be the best project for us to support as it is in desperate need of some new changing rooms. The current changing facilities are in a shed type building, which is certainly not ideal. The school has secured some funding already, but the additional funds I’m hoping to raise will allow the school to finish its project.” Wave 105 Cash for Kids charity manager, Gloria Hill, said: “Kevin has done so well completing his first marathon. It was great to see so many people spur him on at Sainsbury’s in Farlington, and our very own Rick Jackson got involved too by running the first part with Kevin.

“We hope as many people as possible show some support to Kevin over these next 11 months, as 11 more marathons is no easy feat!”
